The Official Numbering Guide


01. Jing Shi Fang (敬事房)

The Office of Vigilance. Think of this as the secret service or internal affairs. They managed the Emperor's schedule and kept an eye on everyone in the palace.

02. Ci Ning Gong (慈宁宫)

Palace of Compassion & Peace. The residence of the Empress Dowager (the Emperor's mother). It was the most powerful woman's retirement home.

03. Yang Xin Dian (养心殿)

Hall of Mental Cultivation. The real power center. This is where the Emperor actually slept and worked, not the big fancy halls.

04. Leng Gong (冷宫)

Cold Palace. Not a specific building, but a term for where disgraced concubines were sent. If you fell out of favor, you went here.

05. Bao He Dian (保和殿)

Hall of Preserving Harmony. The final stage of the Imperial Exam took place here. Only the smartest scholars made it this far.

06. Tai He Dian (太和殿)

Hall of Supreme Harmony. The biggest and most important building. Used for coronations and the Emperor's birthday. No one lived here.

07. Wu Ying Dian (武英殿)

Hall of Martial Valor. Often used for printing books and documents. It was the publishing house of the Empire.

08. Yan Xi Gong (延禧宫)

Palace of Prolonged Happiness. Made famous by the TV show "Story of Yanxi Palace." A residence for concubines.

09. Qian Qing Gong (乾清宫)

Palace of Heavenly Purity. The residence of the Ming and early Qing Emperors. The Emperor's bedroom.

10. Wen Hua Dian (文华殿)

Hall of Literary Glory. Where the Emperor lectured officials and princes. It was the educational center.

11. Wen Yuan Ge (文渊阁)

Wenyuan Pavilion. The Imperial Library. It stored the complete collection of "Siku Quanshu" (The Four Treasures).

12. Kun Ning Gong (坤宁宫)

Palace of Earthly Tranquility. Residence of Empresses. Later converted into a Shamanic worship site.

13. Jing Ren Gong (景仁宫)

Palace of Great Benevolence. One of the Six Eastern Palaces. Residence for high-ranking concubines.

14. Chang Chun Gong (长春宫)

Palace of Eternal Spring. One of the Six Western Palaces. Famous as the residence of Empress Dowager Cixi when she was a concubine.

15. Yu Hua Yuan (御花园)

Imperial Garden. The private garden for the Emperor and his family to relax and walk.

16. Dong Gong (东宫)

Eastern Palace. Usually referred to the Crown Prince's residence. The heir apparent lived here.

17. Shang Shu Fang (上书房)

Study of the Classics. The schoolroom for the Emperor's children and princes. Where they learned to read and write.

18. Nei Wu Fu (内务府)

Imperial Household Department. The administrative office managing the Emperor's private finances, clothes, and food.

19. Chu Xiu Gong (储秀宫)

Palace of Gathering Excellence. Residence for concubines. Also used for preparing imperial weddings.

20. Yu Shan Fang (御膳房)

Imperial Kitchen. The massive kitchen complex that fed the entire court of thousands.
